What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It's used as a screening tool to identify potential weight problems.
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)² or BMI = (weight (lbs) / height (in)²) × 703
BMI Categories
BMI values are categorized as follows:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal Weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
- Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
- Obese: BMI 30 or higher
BMI Limitations
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations:
- Muscle Mass: BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have high BMIs
- Age: BMI ranges may not be appropriate for children, teens, or elderly individuals
- Gender: Body composition differs between men and women
